What if the problem isn't that you don't make enough money, but that no one ever taught you how to make your money work? That question stayed with me after my conversation with Christy Vann on the upcoming episode of Credit Unions Forum.
Christy's story is remarkable. She went from being a single mother struggling under a mountain of debt to becoming a nationally recognized financial educator, author, speaker, and the creator of VANNtastic Finances, with more than 442,000 YouTube subscribers and millions of people reached through her educational content.
But what struck me most wasn't simply her success. It was WHY she does what she does.
- She knows what financial stress feels like.
- She knows what it means to sit at the kitchen table wondering how you're going to make it to the next paycheck.
- And she believes people need education, not shame.
Money Is a Tool
One of the most powerful themes in our conversation was this: money is a tool.
Christy challenged the way we traditionally think about loans, lines of credit, cash flow, HELOCs and debt. She believes many people aren't financially irresponsible. They simply were never taught how the financial system and its tools actually work.
And that raises an important question for those of us in the credit union movement: Are we simply selling financial products? Or are we educating our members on how to use those products to improve their financial lives?
What We Discussed
We talked about:
- Velocity banking
- HELOCs and revolving lines of credit
- Cash flow vs. simply making extra payments
- Financial education
- Changing your mindset around money
- Why fear can keep people from taking action
- Helping members who may have less-than-perfect credit
- Looking beyond a credit score and understanding the person's story
- The opportunity credit unions have to become trusted financial educators
- Faith, purpose and financial stewardship
- And perhaps most importantly, removing the guilt and shame surrounding debt
Setting People Free
One statement from Christy really resonated with me: "People need to be set free."
As credit union leaders, I believe we have an incredible opportunity to help make that happen. Not by simply giving members another product. But by giving them knowledge, confidence and hope. That's what making life beautiful at credit unions is all about.
Watch and Learn
This is a conversation you won't want to miss. The upcoming episode of Credit Unions Forum with Christy Vann is going to challenge the way you think about money, lending, financial education, and the role credit unions can play in changing financial lives.
When we focus on education over shame, we give people the tools to transform their financial futures. That's the real power of the credit union movement.
Watch. Listen. Learn. And then ask yourself: Are we doing enough to teach our members how to make their money work for them?
