The Best Investment You Can Make?

The Best Investment You Can Make?

One of the most powerful leadership exchanges I've ever heard goes like this:

The CFO asks the CEO, "What happens if we train our people and they leave?" The CEO responds, "What happens if we don't train them and they stay?"

That quote from Peter Baeklund hits differently when you lead teams.

People Matter

In business, in leadership, and especially in the credit union movement, our people ARE the experience. Members remember how they were treated. Teams remember how they were developed. Organizations grow when people grow.

Too many leaders view training as an expense. The best leaders view it as an investment in culture, confidence, and future growth.

The Best Investment You Can Make?

The Reality

Here's what happens when we don't invest in our teams:

  • Untrained employees create inconsistency
  • Unsupported employees lose engagement
  • Undeveloped employees stop innovating
  • Appreciated and empowered employees change EVERYTHING

As leaders, we can't expect excellence while starving development.

Growth Matters

Whether it's coaching, mentorship, leadership development, cross-training, conferences, learning opportunities, or simply taking time to invest in someone personally, growth matters. And with the retirement wave in credit unions creating new leadership opportunities, developing your people has never been more critical.

At the end of the day, people want to know: "Do you believe in me enough to help me become better?"

Building People

When organizations invest in people, people invest back into the mission. As John C. Maxwell once said, "One of the highest values of leaders is to develop others."

Leadership isn't about building positions. It's about building people.

Take Action

The most expensive risk in business isn't training your people and watching them leave. It's not training them and watching them stay. Invest in culture. Invest in confidence. Invest in your team's future growth.

When you develop your people, you're not just building skills. You're building loyalty, innovation, and a stronger organization from the inside out.

What's one way a leader invested in YOU that changed your career or life?
